Episode Twenty Amy Brady of Here For The Beer
This week I’m talking to Amy from Here For The Beer. Ever wonder how they got started, or thought about beer vacationing? Sorry for the poorer quality on the audio on this one. East Coast Beercast is experiencing my two and a half year old some technical difficulty. I also have an exciting NEW project in the works that some of my guests know about. I won’t say anything else at this time, but keep your eyes peeled early July. It also looks like I will be missing an episode next week, but rest assured well be back on track after that, or as soon as potty training is done. Here are some links to Here for the Beer!

Equilibrium.
Beernews.org drew my attention to a blog post by World Class Beverages which brought up a point that a lot of people are discussing on the net. Are there to many brewers in the United States? This is an idea. The blog post points out that it is difficult for start up breweries to get the kind of exposure they may need on shelves due to the “clutter” of other craft beers. I think we should look at things historically. At one point there were over 4,000 breweries in the United States(1893). Shortly after that we saw a step decline to around 1,500 just before the 18th amendment was passed. With consolidation after prohibition, at one point, there were just over 80 breweries(1980). Now after an incredible growth in the number of breweries we are back to 1500. I think this is due to equilibrium. I believe that the United States can support this number of breweries and industry will survive due to annual attrition and opening of new breweries. Is there a chance that we could surpass this mark. Maybe, but it would require two things. An increase in market share for craft brewers, and a focus on local or state wide only distribution as seen by breweries like New Glarus. It is important to point out that when America had 4,000 breweries times were very different. Regulation was non existent, and there were no larger than average breweries providing millions of barrels a year. What does the future hold. I don’t think any one knows for certain, but it will be interesting to see.

Huma-Lupa-Licious
I just read a great article from Inc. Magazine online. It’s about a small brewpub in Michigan that decided to start in a town in the middle of nowhere and three years later their beer is available in about 1,000 stores and vendors. And when you head to the web page and scroll down you will notice that they have had some bad beer go out. What did they do about it, aside from the spanking video. They offered a number of different refund options. These guys are obviously passionate about good beer. I love reading stories like this. It means that no matter how the economy is doing, the craft beer industry in America will always have room for grass roots development and expansion. The title up there is one of their beers. Follow the link below to their website and check them out, or if you live in Michigan, why not head there in person.
Episode 8 Tom Cizauskas

South Carolina Rise up!
A digitel call to action to help S.C.’s craft beer.
I was going to post something else tonight after I got home from recording Episode 8, but I checked my RSS feed and found this. Long story short; Right now you can not sample or buy directly from a brewery at all in South Carolina. This could change. If you live in SC and want to have a say in how beer laws are determined (you know, kinda what those guys we call our Fore-fathers wanted for us as a nation) then follow the link and call your representative. If you know some one who lives in SC, why not pass along the word.
